Spains support for EU entry

Spain supported Bulgaria\'s EU entry on January 1 2007, Spanish state secretary for the European Union Alberto Navarro said.
Radio France Internationale reported that Navarro spoke about the future of the European Union and discussed the accession of new member states.
Spain usually gave full support for the enlargement process, Navarro said. The reasons for backing Bulgaria and Romania\'s EU entry were three.
Accession of the two countries could contribute to Europe\'s political stability, Navarro said. At the same time the accession of new countries was going to stabilise the European economy and create more workplaces. Spain also had its ethical reasons for supporting the enlargement, Navarro said.
Navarro said that globalisation made it difficult for countries to find solutions on the national level. Joint European initiatives were the only possible option, said he.

MORE BRITISH ACQUIRE PROPERTY IN BULGARIA\'S SMALLER VILLAGES.

Increasing numbers of British families were interested in the purchase of property in Bulgaria\'s Dryanovo and other smaller populated areas of the country, Mail and Guardian Online reported.
Some of the problems families found concerning the purchase in small Bulgarian villages included Bulgarian regulations saying that only foreign enterprises rather than individuals could buy property in the country. (But of course company formation can overcome this regulation.)
One other problem was the old and underdeveloped infrastructure in some less populated areas, Mail and Guardian reported.
According to government reports more than 1150 British citizens applied for long-term residence permit in Bulgaria in 2005 alone.
According to Bulgarian property agents the lower prices made Bulgarian property competitive and were preferred over real estate in Spain, Portugal and Croatia.

BULGARIA READIES TO LEAVE ITS PAST BEHIND AND JOIN EUROPE

In an article named Iron Curtain Lifted Slowly On Country Brimming With European Allure, the San Francisco Chronicle describes latest developments in Bulgaria, on its way to EU entry. According to the article Bulgaria was expected to become one of the new hotspots of European tourism. The country still had a long way to go but offered “fascinating, unspoiled… destinations for slightly adventurous travelers”, the article said. Bulgaria managed to get rid of its Soviet Union past ties slower that countries like Slovenia and the Czech Republic, San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Its pro-eastern image was already outdated, however. The author points out he had the chance to see old churches, taste a wide variety of wines, visit rural areas and examine archaeological treasures. In addition, the country offered its Black Sea beaches and coastal resorts. Bulgaria has been consistently turning westward with its NATO membership and expected EU entry, the article said. Such developments were expected to further strengthen the country’s economy. Still, improvement to the tourism services and mainly customer care were needed, the article said.
